چکیده

Sense inventories for polysemous predicates are often comprised by a number of related senses. In this paper, we examine different types of relations within sense inventories and give a qualitative analysis of the effects they have on decisions made by the annotators and annotator error. We also discuss some common traps and pitfalls in design of sense inventories. We use the data set developed specifically for the task of annotating sense distinctions dependent predominantly on semantics of the arguments and only to a lesser extent on syntactic

An annotation scheme for Persian based on Autonomous Phrases Theory and Universal Dependencies

A treebank is a corpus with linguistic annotations above the level of the parts of speech. During the first half of the present decade, three treebanks have been developed for Persian either originally or subsequently based on dependency grammar: Persian Treebank (PerTreeBank), Persian Syntactic Dependency Treebank, and Uppsala Persian Dependency Treebank (UPDT). The syntactic analysis of a sen...

Lexicalised Systematic Polysemy in WordNet

This paper describes an attempt to gain more insight into the mechanisms that underlie lexicalised systematic polysemy. This phenomenon is interpreted as systematic sense combinations that are valid for more than one word. The hierarchical structure of WordNet is exploited to create a working definition of systematic polysemy and extract polysemic patterns at a level of generalisation that allo...

Semantic annotation of a Japanese speech corpus

This paper describes the semantic annotations we are performing on theCallHome Japanese corpus of spontaneous, unscripted telephone conversations (LDC, 1996). Our annotations include (i) semantic classes for all nouns and verbs; (ii) verb senses for all main verbs; and (iii) relations between main verbs and their complements in the same utterance. Our semantic tagset is taken from NTT’s Goi-Tai...

Verb polysemy and frequency effects in thematic fit modeling

While several data sets for evaluating thematic fit of verb-role-filler triples exist, they do not control for verb polysemy. Thus, it is unclear how verb polysemy affects human ratings of thematic fit and how best to model that. We present a new dataset of human ratings on high vs. low-polysemy verbs matched for verb frequency, together with high vs. low-frequency and well-fitting vs. poorly-f...

Semi-productive Polysemy and Sense Extension

In this paper we discuss various aspects of systematic or conventional polysemy and their formal treatment within an implemented constraint based approach to linguistic representation. We distinguish between two classes of systematic polysemy: constructional polysemy, where a single sense assigned to a lexical entry is contextually specialised, and sense extension, which predictably relates two...
